Microsoft Osbornes Windows 8
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, January 08 2013 @ 03:11 PM EST
I saw a MS-surface in the store for the first time this weekend.

And a more ugly, less functional bit of plastic molding I've never seen outside
the Walmart toy department.

The basic unit is an all-sharp-corners cheap-flat-sticky-plastic case that looks
uncomfortable to hold and carry (not to mention embarrassing to carry). The
keyboard has achieved the almost-incredible feat of making the old Commodore Pet
chicklet keyboard look expensive and feel responsive. For you iPad users, you
can get the feel of the Microsoft keyboard by sprinkling plastic tiddly-winks
over the top of your screen-based keyboard.

The keyboard/cover has a flexible plastic hinge--even to the most casual glance
it's obvious that all the reports about the cover coming apart have to be true.
I wouldn't buy a three-ring notebook with that cheap-looking a flap.

I didn't actually try touching the screen, just in case it sucked all the
remaining coolness out of my whole family. And I know what kind of performance
and responsiveness to expect from Microsoft operating systems. (In any case, a
quick review of a new interface is always pointless. I'm still getting more
comfortable with my three-month-old Samsung/Android Note 10" tablet.)
