When I read that Shuttleworth had succeeded in putting Ubuntu with Android on a
smartphone I thought, 'what a twonk!'. A full office suite together with a
Digital Audio Workstation and image editing on a smartphone is not going to
change the world.
Ubuntu on a large touch-tablet or laptop with front and rear camera and Android
apps is what the world needs. If you need to do much more than phone a friend or
play Angry Birds whilst on the move, then a smartphone and the current ranges of
touchtablet are little more than toys.
There is an app for the iPad for which I lust. It displays the chord charts for
songs and the repertoire of songs is huge. It is low cost. My musician
colleagues use it as a replacement for paper music charts on stage.
A device that supports a 'real' keyboard and mouse, with power and HD screen,
but which runs alternatively as a touchtablet on-the-move that can do everything
from read QR codes to display chord charts and, yes, play Angry Birds would be
enough to prise my credit card from my hot, sticky hands. I might even invest in
one of the lower cost mobile broadband offerings.
