If you can find a University or Library that has a printed copy
of so much of that old stuff in Jstor, then it is "free". Except
you end up like a medieaval monk wandering among the
institutions in search of knowledge.

It costs some amount of money to scan, store and serve these
books. Jstor hopes to recover those costs via subscriptions,
so their terms of service try to pretend you cannot give their
books to a friend. Google would have recovered those costs
via ads for products your cookie told them you like.
