This is very important

I would like to see some solid data on attitudes toward
software patentability among commercial and academic
computer scientists and engineers. Perhaps a survey of all
the CS faculty at US colleges and universities could be
done. As far as industry is concerned, it would be harder
to get unbiased opinions, but the beliefs of the actual tech
people (as opposed to management or legal) are still crucial
to any discussion of the issue.

One thing I feel sure of, though - you would be hard-pressed
to find any remotely competent scientist or engineer who
disputes that all software is mathematical algorithms. It
would be akin to finding an astrophysicist or geologist who
believes the world was created 5500 years ago.

Are developers really anti-patent?

There are a large number of people who will believe whatever they find
personally beneficial. But I have never heard a reasonable argument as to why
software should be patentable, rather than only copyrightable.

N.B.: I'm not claiming merely that I've never heard an argument I believe.
This is a much stronger claim.
