The new machine consists of the parts of the old machine plus the charges introduced into memory cells.

This is analogous to patenting a charged battery separately from a discharged battery. I leave it as an exercise for the reader to evaluate for themselves whether this makes sense.

The "new machine" concept seems extraordinarily weird.

It's like hey, I bought a computer, and made a new machine by plugging it in.
Then I made another new machine by hitting the power switch, and a further new
machine by logging in. Then I ran out of space at my desk and had to take the
first 3 machines back to the shop.
