Even in the case of the shuttle, digital computers are irrelevant.
It makes it cheaper to do though.
For the longest times, missiles (and satellites for that matter) did not use
digital computers. They used analog equivalences with voltage differentials and
amplifiers.
The early moon launches were done with such analog systems.
Of course, they were all one shots (literally). Couldn't be repurposed (saw
those projects die in the 70s).[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Assuming the Shuttle is/was patentable, note that it is NOT
software running on a computer. It's a hardware device that
flies in space. The computers, while important (all 5), are
PART of the item. The shuttle does not run "on a computer" -
the computers run on the shuttle.
And the specific programs that run on the shuttle are
themselves not patentable - because the algorithms they run
can be done in someone's head, or on a slide rule (and for
years they WERE done on slide rules).

etc)
