No. It reached that point a long time ago. I don't see a lot
of civil discourse. I see a lot of lies, a lot of selective
quoting of law & constitution, and a lot of deep, raw
emotion.

And in this discussion, Godwin's Law doesn't apply. It is
right on target. So to speak. I have some deeply held
opinions on the topic, but don't care to get embroiled in
this mess. Perhaps instead, I will go practice, and apply
for a concealed weapons permit, which by Iowa law, must be
granted to me. I don't have a weapon that can be concealed,
but still...

And every farmer that I know has at least one gun around for
groundhogs (undermining building foundations), rabid skunks
and raccoons, and the occasional badger (feral, not
Wisconsin). The sheriff won't come out for these types of
problems, and we have never voted to fund them for it. Oh,
and I swear that I saw a cougar this weekend, although the
Iowa DNR swears that they do not exist in Iowa, despite a
record high supply of their favorite food - white-tail deer.

There are better things to argue about. I seriously doubt
that anyone's mind has been changed by these tirades. It has
just dragged Groklaw down to the level of Slashdot.

Is that because you don't like it that you and Hitler are on
the same side of an issue? Let's not cherry pick here. If
we're overhauling one of the first 10, why not look at the
others too.

First Amendment -
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of
religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or
abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the
right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition
the Government for a redress of grievances.

I think this concept is outdated. The media is out of
control and only interested in ratings. Clearly we need
Congress to step in and regulate the media.

Second - already being discussed.

Third - No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in
any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of
war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

If a soldier is hungry and tired why wouldn't you open your
home to him? Clearly the founding father's were selfish.

Fourth Amendment - The right of the people to be secure in
their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against
unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated,
and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause,
supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly
describing the place to be searched, and the persons or
things to be seized.

What do you have to hide, that you don't want the police to
find? Especially if you might be a terrorist. Or you have
a lot of guns. This one needs to go.

Fifth Amendment - No person shall be held to answer for a
capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a
presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases
arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when
in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall
any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put
in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any
criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be
deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process
of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use,
without just compensation.

Due process gets in the way of protecting ourselves from
terrorists. I say let the government lock up anyone they
feel is a threat to peace. I trust their judgement.

I can go on if necessary...

I really respect you PJ and what you have done for open
source software, but I absolutely cannot come close to
seeing eye to eye with you on this one.
