You missed the main thrust of the article

A solution based on giving people the same thing for a new, higher price only opens you up to disruption. A solution based on providing more value for your users that keeps them loyal to you is going to last a lot longer.

Consider those two sentences, because they are important. The rest of the article doesn't really matter. Just those two sentences.

Apply them to ANY company. Does that company actually provide you enough value to keep you loyal?

Look at Microsoft's performance in the Mobile market, as compared to Apple or Samsung. Or Nokia, where supposedly obsolete phones are selling better than the latest and greatest.

When is a Paywall Not a Paywall?

I pay for the New York Times out of guilt, and a feeling that it is the best
newspaper in the world, and worthy of a modest contribution. For other
newspapers, the delete cookies option is an easy choice.

I don't think the publishers have really understood that people like to look
briefly at lots of different papers, and not get all their news from a
particular favorite. Very small micro-payments, or much cheaper subscriptions,
might bring in more revenue.

I am intrigued that the version of Chrome supplied with my new Google Nexus 10
does not permit the deletion of cookies - not in any option I can find, anyway.
Fortunately, Firefox does.
