The advent of gun control started since confederation

I don't know what "advent of gun control" you are referring
to.
You cannot draw any before and after event in Canada
regarding gun control laws. There is a constant stream of
laws since the late 1800s (on top of the provencial laws).

Suicide rates in Canada are a bit lower than the US, but
actually quite comparable to be statistically meaningful.

But, in reality, anybody who would want a gun can just cross
the US-Canada border and get one. 75% of the population
lives within an hour drive from the border (you might have
to drive a little longer to get to a state with loose gun
laws though). This is where most illegal guns in Canada
(and Mexico) come from anyway.
