I the only thing you have to defend yourself is a gun, you might as well be
dead.

Responding to break-ins in one's home with guns is the leading cause of deaths
among gun-owning households. Most often a father shooting a son or a son
shooting a father.

A much better weapon to use to respond to burglars is a stun gun.

Firing a tower musket from the 1800's would be as risky as
facing burglar. The sharps was new by about 50 years, but
I've never found the .50 call ammo for it.
