The 98% figure was from Dr. Kleck, a criminologist. It is
based on surveys, as many gun defenses never get reported to
authorities, so no official counting exists.

Some people don't believe in the accuracy of the figure, but
I'm not aware of anyone who has done a more accurate survey,
so for now I'm going with Kleck's figure.

As for "well regulated militia", I've already spoken to that
elsewhere. (It's well-regulated, a single hyphenated word.
And militia means armed populace.)

If you would like to push for an amendment to the
constitution that specifically outlawed nukes and other area
effect weapons, I don't think you will get much resistance.

You say there are about 10,000 gun deaths per year. How
many of them are due to the war on drugs? All hard drugs
combined kill about 5,000 people a year. Alcohol disease
kills about 250,000 people a year. Nicotine kills about
360,000 people a year. Perhaps if we'd like to reduce
death by guns, we should start with a re-think on
this drug war.
