1) Japan is not a good proxy to America. The culture there
is very different. There is far less violent crime across
the board, including crime by knife.

2) The "study" which I believe you are referring to, was
done in a neighborhood that had a high number of drug
houses. The correlation rate for bars on windows was higher
than for guns in the house. Yes, it's true. Bad
neighborhoods with drug houses are dangerous.

3) Jumping from high places is more effective a method of
suicide. Guess what. Suicidal people will find a means.

4) 98% of the time that a gun is used for defense in the
US, no shots are fired. The gun is sometimes displayed,
sometimes it is merely alluded to. Less than one half of
one percent of the time that a gun is "used" in self
defense, is anybody struck by a bullet.

Accidental shootings and church/school/theater attacks make
news because they are _rare_. A criminal suddenly
remembering urgent business on the other side of town when
seeing the business end of a barrel almost never makes the
news, because it happens so often as to be completely
unsurprising.
