If you could wave a magic wand and have every gun posessed by a legal owner
taken away, or even every gun in the US. The criminals would import more guns
immediately.

Your problem is you see this as a 'good guy vs bad buy' scenario. No, it's not.
It's criminal vs criminal vs law abiding citizen.

Your premise that if everyone gave up guns except the criminals, they'd only use
handguns is both simplistic and if you'll pardon me, extremely poorly thought
out.

By your own words, things tend to be one-up manship. Do you think criminals are
LESS inclined to such things? Criminals want bigger flashier guns not to deal
with law abiding citizens, but to deal WITH EACH OTHER!

So no, taking away every gun from law abiding citizens would not make criminals
settle on handguns, it'd just mean only the criminals would have the weapons,
both auto, semi, and single shot.

On the other point, what you're basically saying is, wouldn't it be better if
only criminals had guns and only had handguns, wouldn't we be better off if
every criminal could only kill 5-6 people at a time, and nobody but police (who
are 10-15 minutes away AT BEST) were the only ones who could clean up the mess
afterwards?

Please think about that suggestion, maybe you will realize why it is so wrong.
