Soo cool: spacex- reusable-grasshopper-rocket-test-flight-video

I just heard about this yesterday. My oldest son and his
wife both work at SpaceX. They were back in Iowa for
Christmas, and loaded up Joe's siblings with SpaceX
trinkets. I got the MIT fleece jacket, so I considered it a
win!

SpaceX sounds like a great place to work. They have a sense
of humor. There are lots of super intelligent people there.
And they apparently have more to do than time to do it.
Sounds familiar.

Apparently, they are assembling a group of people that could
rival the original NASA teams. There are some young, bright,
aggressive people working on this.

If the rest are anything like my son, they have quite a
crew. Joe graduated from MIT with his PhD in June. Thesis
was on high-speed lithography for nanotech on flexible
substrates. He showed me what he was working on and
explained it, but my BSME level mind didn't grasp it all.
Joe got an interview for a faculty position at MIT, but
decided to take the SpaceX job instead. So, from nano to
space structures.

I remember how pumped I was when I got my first industry
job. I had all the support I could want - original
designers, people who wrote the books, research labs,
manufacturing, scanning electron microscopes, the whole nine
yards. I would like a shot at what my son is doing, and am
excited about what is happening despite the best efforts of
the American economy to suppress it. More power to 'em!

I guess I'm bragging, but I am proud of the kid, even if he
does try to lecture me once in a while. :-) I seem to
remember doing the same thing to my Dad. He did predict
this,
in so many words.

I in no way mean to disparage SpaceX, which is breaking ground as the "UPS" to space.

But the McDonnell Douglas DC-X (AKA, the Delta Clipper eXperimental) did this and more back in the '90s. Until it was transferred to NASA and destroyed.

If you want to see a really impressive video, check out this YouTube video.

I'm pleased as punch SpaceX is carrying on the spirit of the DC-X project, but I just want to give a little credit where credit is due.
