Iirc, these is a special hearing (I want to say Daubert,
it's come up a number of times in Groklaw's coverage of
trials) for determining whether someone qualifies as an
expert. As to the payments, the question can be raised in
cross-examination, though I don't know how far a lawyer can
legally go in this.

Whether a lawyer can move to have a witness's testimony
struck for improper bias... I doubt it. I'd expect that to
be left to the individual jurors. Possibly perjury charges,
if it's something obvious and egregious, I guess.

IANAL, so don't take this as expert testimony or anything.
