Not to mention that whether or not you hit the fish, how far behind that target
will the projectiles travel?

I watched this documentary one time about all the lead
buckshot being
consumed by waterfowl and slowly killing them
due to lead poisoning. It is an
instinct for these birds to
eat gravel which stays in their gizzard and helps
them to
grind their food. Apparently buckshot is the perfect size
for this.

Mythbusters shows a better reason to not shoot into water. With anything
more powerful than a handgun, the bullet fragments as soon as it hits the
water, and won't do any damage to the target. Well they do show the shotgun
