I hope you know how that works! If it's $35 in China it will be $150+ for the
consumer (at least).
I have seen a lot of product with even more insane mark-ups in the past years.
A prime example is a Puxing handheld radio. 500pcs price from P. was ~$30 and
sold by Motorola for $785. Only difference was the logo.....
No surprise China Inc. tries to sell now directly via ebay and meanwhile also
through web-merchants. US website and direct shipping from Hong-Kong or China.
As US manufacturers have successfully bribed the import duties for almost
everything to zero and their Fedex/UPS/DHL rates are extremely low it's an easy
and far more profitable business.

Thanks to commenter
kuroshima for the term
scraplet to describe these devices. I've seen enough sub $150 tablets
that I feel like Lady Macbeth as I wash my hands. You should have given more
prominence to the headline
on the original: Hardware is Dead. These are
throwaway devices. No maker, no name, no support. I did not see anything in the
article about OS upgrades (security anyone?), sideloading apps, video
performance is typically shoddy. They may be suited for the purpose of OLPC's latest effort if the longterm
reliability is good
enough.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Go to a Big Lots Store... Go to the electronic section...
Seriously Polaroid branded tablets in the stores start at
$50. Then look at the sub $15 MP3 Player sitting next to
the Sub $20 Camcorders and 14 MP Digital Cameras... and
that is all in-store.
Online:
You can get $36 HDMI Dongles on sale at a well known US
online retailer... and they were as low as $25 on black
Friday (Just not at this retailer).
A well known Chinese wholesale web-store is also currently
selling 10" Android netbooks, running Jelly Bean, for
$125...
