the citizenry would then be trained as a
militia. My point was that the state wouldn't have to pay for the guns and
ammo.

As I said an untrained armed citizenry is not a militia. It is a danger to
everyone, as recent and other events have repeatedly shown.

Not sure what disaster you're referring to about the 1812 War. But As near as I
can tell it worked as well as it could have. Considering, we were attacked by
the most powerful nation on Earth and we had no standing army or navy, and still
managed to win in the end.

Outside of the Royal Navy raiding U.S. ships for English born crew, the first
attack was done by the U.S. into Canada. Overall the war was a draw, with much
incompetence on both sides. A big problem for the U.S. was the militia training
often considered of little more than meeting at the pub. Then there was the
problem at Queenston Heights, where many of the militia flat out refused to
cross the river. There was also incompetent command, among other problems. It
was only later in the was that the U.S. military gain much competence, but by
then, the war was pretty much over. Also, one of the goals of that war was to
take over what is now Canada. I don't recall that happening.

You seem to have your history a little mixed up.
Not sure what
disaster you're referring to about the 1812 War. But As near as I can tell it

I do not think the USA was the most powerful
nation on Earth in 1812. They badly underestimated the strength of the local
forces (British, French and Native) and were defeated.
