What you're describing is an untrained militia which, as the U.S. discovered in
the war of 1812, is worse than useless. Proper use of guns in such a situation
requires proper training and discipline. You don't get that by gathering a
bunch of gun happy zealots.
A militia, at least in Canada, means people who regularly train as part time
soldiers.
BTW, my father was in the militia, prior to joining the regular army during
WW2.

I think you have it backwards. The reason for preserving possession of weapons
by citizens was to protect against the government getting too strong and abusing
those citizens. The founders believed it necessary to insure our government
couldn't do to us what King George III and other European governments had done
to drive their ancestors to flee across an ocean. I fear we are getting close to
the point where that belief will be validated.
