While some get honours, Cook gets a pay cut!
Authored by: tiger99 on Wednesday, January 02 2013 @ 08:25 AM EST
Apple boss Tim Cook in massive pay cut (BBC)

I can't say that I am surprised, although it is a very much larger cut than I have ever imagined was possible.

I can think of another CEO who may be having a similar cut soon, if he manages to keep his job. That will not be good for the furniture industry....

$5 lamps powered by gravity for the 3rd World
Authored by: Gringo_ on Wednesday, January 02 2013 @ 08:50 AM EST

Cool idea! Link.

A lamp for $5 that does not require any electrical power source?

It may sound like an impossible dream, but two designers in London have built functioning prototypes of GravityLight, a cheap way for people in developing countries to light homes, recharge batteries, or power a radio. And they just exceeded their Indiegogo fundraising goal by more than 500 percent with 21 days left in their campaign, so they’ll have the resources to mass-produce the light for less than $5 a unit.

The Nokia Form 20-F two years ago
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, January 02 2013 @ 12:02 PM EST
You didn't read the Form 20-F which Nokia Corporation filed with the USA Securities and Exchanges Commission on 11 March, 2011? Tomi Ahonen did. At the time he remarked how many of the possible problems that Nokia warned might come true, he was in fact already convinced would also come true, and now we see from the evidence, that they also have indeed come true.A lengthy blog writing

Significant booting challenges on EFI systems when upgrading to Windows 8
Authored by: hAckz0r on Wednesday, January 02 2013 @ 04:03 PM EST
From EDN Electronics Magazine; Unified Extensible Firmware Interface boot option problems when upgrading to Win8.

Challenge #1 - Connecting your system disk to another MB port and Windows is not available!
Windows will not boot until you connect the drive back to the original port or change the device number record in the Windows Boot Manager entry

Challenge #2 – You cannot boot Windows copy on EFI-based computer
you will need to update this [UEFI GUID] record in order to get Windows back on [its] rails.

Sounds like I'm missing all the fun.

Emailing a scanned document patented ...
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, January 02 2013 @ 06:20 PM EST
"When Steven Vicinanza got a letter in the mail earlier this year informing him that he needed to pay $1,000 per employee for a license to some “distributed computer architecture” patents, he didn’t quite believe it at first".

"The letter seemed to be saying anyone using a modern office scanner to scan documents to e-mail would have to pay —which is to say, just about any business, period." link

Apple patents method to bend glass
Authored by: N_au on Thursday, January 03 2013 @ 12:10 AM EST
Just read this article Apple patents method to bend glass

How backward are the people who work for this mob. Haven't they seen bent glass before? That is the way they have made windscreens for cars for years for for example. And it has to be perfect with no distortions. I know it is now different because, wait for it!! It is on a phone!!!

iPad suffers dramatic post-Christmas web share fall
Authored by: Gringo_ on Thursday, January 03 2013 @ 11:10 AM EST

Link.

Summary: The iPad's Web usage share took a battering during December as people unwrapped, and started to use Kindle Fire, Samsung Galaxy, and Google Nexus tablets.

You will note in that report that some poor suckers ended up with a Surface tablet under the tree. They will be returning those shortly as they encounter defects, or simply can't figure out the UI. The Windows Phone, however, did not even receive an honourable mention when it came to phone stats.

Samsung confirms it will sell Tizen-based smartphones
Authored by: Gringo_ on Thursday, January 03 2013 @ 11:15 AM EST

Charlie Osborne over at ZDNet tells us Samsung will begin selling smartphones that feature the Tizen operating system this year.

Tizen is an open-source operating system which is based on Linux, coming into being after the demise of Nokia's MeeGo. After acquiring development partners including Microsoft, Samsung and Intel, the OS has become an alternative solution to operating systems such as Android or Apple's iOS. Overseen by the Linux Foundation, the operating system was considered to be more open, although there are a number of restrictions in place to stop tampering with the underlying platform.

History
Authored by: symbolset on Saturday, January 05 2013 @ 03:48 AM EST
MPLA patents are how Microsoft prevented Linux and other FOSS platforms from
challenging them in the '90s. In a multimedia world having a patent-encumbered
video codec implemented by every device meant that FOSS couldn't legally play.
This was worked around by distros that didn't provide the codecs, but downloaded
them on demand. It wasn't legal in the US, but it worked.

Now Google has given
us good codecs we can freely use without breaking the law. That's a good thing
as we like to comply when we can. It cost them many millions of dollars to do
that and I, for one, am thankful.
