It's not gravity powered. It's powered by the effort of lifting that bag of
dirt. It takes energy to lift that bag and that energy is then used to produce
electricity as the bag drops. In that respect, it's no different from any of
the other human powered generators that have appeared over the years.
BTW, gravity has been used for centuries to produce power. That's how the hydro
generating stations work and water wheel powered mills long before that.
Something, be it humans, animals or the sun has to lift some matter up to a
sufficient height and then the falling matter can then be used to provide
power.

"Now, what do we do when we run out of gravity in a few years?"

This is a wonderful idea.
Basically taking an old concept (used in the old wooden clocks, not the
grandfather kind), and using modern technology to make a highly efficient lamp.
There are so many old concepts out there that have been forgotten due to
technology advancing so fast. Great discoveries can come out of rediscovering
them and reapplying them with current techniques.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

No batteries, no solar cells, no windmills, waterwheels, whatever; just muscle
power. I'm disappointed by some of the comments. Folks in 3rd world countries
tend to do _everything_ by muscle power, in contrast to here, where much energy
is expended on non-productive activities like sports and exercise. While
exercise is good for health reasons, it's not the same as hunting, farming,
gathering, making clothes, preparing food, shelter, etc. Don't forget the added
benefit of reducing dependence on the oil companies.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
