A note to Microsoft: from this particular consumer's perspective:
Windows
Phone undermines itself without any help at all from anyone else!
Note:
This does not speak to any particular actual activity on the part of anyone
else. This is just a fact that in my humble opinion (this customer) Windows
Phone is very icky!

>> Google explained that users would still be able to sync their data
using open-standards protocols including CalDAV, CardDAV, and IMAP.
But Microsoft argued that these were "older protocols," and that
using them would force Windows Phone owners to "degrade their
mobile email experience." <<
Funny how for years those OS and apps that have conformed to these
open-standards, IETF and RFC supported protocols have had all
manner of difficulties syncing with MS Exchange servers because
MS didn't support them, or didn't support them cleanly and legally.
Now the boot is on the other foot.

Obviously the Windows phone has failed. Just read Tomi
Ahom's blog. Nokia's
"two year" are up. The WinPhone hasn't
got a chance. Nobody wants it, and it is
not profitable for
OEMs. They can't customize it. Nokia can't release a version
with a key pad, or with Nokia Wallet using Near Field... The
OS is totally
under the control of Microsoft in an age whern
every OEM has Android or at
least their own OS with which
they can do what they want.
I was
wondering how the WinPhone did in the 4th quarter -
over the holidays... Those
figures haven't come out yet. Now
Microsoft has just told us - it clearly
didn't do well, and
they are looking for somebody to blame.
It is so
silly to see Microsoft lash out at Google as if
it is Google fault the WinPhone
failed! Microsoft should be
embarrassed! [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

If I were Google I would consider an offer along the lines of
"We will consider writing the following apps for Win phone provided
(a) you provide us with a completely documented list of all APIs etc and a
guarantee that they will not be changed without you giving us at least 12 months
notice of all such changes and;
(b) You abandon the following legal actions and undertake to never recommence
them
(follows a long list of actions against Android and HTC) and
(c) You negotiate payment for the licensing of patents you have been using.
(follows a long list of patents)
(d) you provide users of Windows phone the option to choose Google as the
default search engine shown on startup.
Note that
(i) all apps provided by Google will clearly show that they were provided by
Google and you will make no attempt to hide or obfuscate this fact and
(ii) Said apps will only be delivered after (a), (b) and (c) above, have been
completed to Googles' satisfaction.
And make this offer as part of a court proceeding providing evidence of the
reasons for these conditions.

You could argue that MS is helping Linux and BSD by not
developing IE for other platforms ;)
Seriously, though, MS has no leg to stand on when they are
not producing MS-Office for Linux. Sure, I prefer to use
Open/Libre Office, but MS' defense of not making a product for
a minority market should work equally well for Google. MS is
practically paying people to use Windows phones, so why
would Google waste time and money on it?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

1. Microsoft accuses Google of undermining Windows 8
2. Microsoft proclaims that they are doing a better job than Google at
undermining Windows 8
3. ???
4. Profit!

Note the wording... take a passive non-action and spin it into an ongoing
nefarious activity.
Should pair well with SCO's negative knowledge theory...[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
