That is not the only way. I agree that
it would be wise to think about the fact
that it's easier to get a gun than to
get mental help. It used to be that people
with mental troubles could get that help
in hospitals that isolated them from the
rest of society. Obviously, that would
prevent the mentally ill from killing people
with guns and assault rifles.
At some point, somebody thought that the mentally
ill could be treated without the need for hospitals,
due to overconfidence in medications. But the
results are now in, and it's clear that medications
alone don't do the full job.
There's an article I read yesterday that I can't find
this minute by a mom of a young boy who is manifesting
mental difficulties, and she expresses her frustration
that the only way to contain him would be if he breaks
a law and gets put in jail. There is no other resources
available to her.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Gun laws obviously have no preventive influence, either.
1. The guns used were legally acquired.
2. According to hearsay, the boy tried to buy a gun and the
laws prevented him from buying it.
3. Anyone who can steal a gun won't care what the law says.
4. Zip guns are easy to make.
5. Criminals always have guns.
6. Logic does not work in this case. I don't know why I am
bothering. If you want gun control, then you will use a
tragedy like this to achieve your aims, regardless of the
cost to the victims. We already have too many laws that
aren't enforced, or are enforced selectively. There are too
many laws that were passed so it would look like legislators
were doing their job when they were just waving the flag.
When things like this happen, I remember the Murrah Building
bombing in Oklahoma City, Perhaps you saw that iconic
picture of a firefighter carrying out a dead child from the
bomb site. If you go to the memorial built on the former
site of the Murrah Building, you will find a small section
of the memorial by the reflecting pool that has a chair for
each victim of the bombing. There are about 24 small chairs
for the children who were in the daycare of that building.
My niece was bounced out of bed when that bomb went off. She
lives 1 1/2 miles from the bomb site. My nephew was usually
in that building at the time when that bomb went off. He is
a realtor, and went to the FHA office there - but not on
that Wednesday.
The bomb was made out of fertilizer and fuel oil. How are
you going to stop that?
How would gun laws have stopped 9/11?
Violence will always find a way, including yours. Drop your
fear and start defending yourself. Make contact with your
neighbors. Start helping your community on a personal level.
Be concerned about people who don't have enough, or like the
family involved in this tragedy, who don't make contact with
others. Befriend the lonely and outcasts.
It's messy, but it works. If you are willing to make the
effort.
