This used to be the case pre-Gutenberg, save the inconvenience
of travelling on foot or by boat a few thousand miles to get to
some of the libraries. One might have expected the printing
press to be a liberating force, after soothing the kerfuffles of the
monks and scribes who had previously controlled copying.
Printing is an industrial process and the trade guilds persuaded
the law makers to give them a monopoly on it. Thus for five
hundred years the publishers have imposed themselves as
gatekeepers to humanity's knowledge and culture.
It's gonna be a tough call to get the lawmakers of today to
claw back the reckless gift of Queen Anne.
