We had to make 911 work in New Zealand, as well as our own
widely publicised 111. Seems too many people had been
watching junk TV shows ...
Now that the US has opted out, it can't claim ITU backing,
only Hollwood will help impose 911 worldwide.

Australia's 'native' emergency numbers are 000 and 106 (TTY service for
the deaf). GSM has 112 hard coded in the handsets so this code is also
supported in the mobile networks. Supporting 911 would be difficult as
there are many normal geographic numbers that begin with 911 that would
be inaccessible if 911 were to be hijacked for emergency services. The
exception would be mobile and IP networks that effectively support on hook
