Don't forget the great depression

I was referring to the availability caused by the depression...

It prevented publishers from even publishing - the authors didn't write as they
were too busy scrounging food as publishers didn't have the money to buy on
speculation.

Then WW2 came along, many resources redirected to the war effort, and that
impacted publishing as well.

The effect would have indirect rather than direct. The publishers didn't
necessarily gain as much additional/new product.

At least some of what was published belonged to the government.
