Nope, 10x - x does not equal 9. That would have been leaping ahead in the proof.
10x - x = 9x. That's basic algebra. The statement stands on its own. I did it
right.

More specifically, statements four and five were simplifying the two sides of
statement three. Then statement six substituted those simpler results back into
three.

Basically, you're assuming step six, and trying to substitute that back into
five, but you can't assume six. You have to derive it, and a necessary step in
that derivation is step five.
