Language - "hell" is swearing?
Authored by: albert on Friday, December 14 2012 @ 01:00 PM EST
The term 'bloody' originated from taking an oath (swearing), on God's Holy
Blood. 'Bloody hell'(or bloody anything) might be offensive to the British;
here in the US, not so much. Since the Bible prohibits swearing on God,
Jesus(considered to actually be God on earth, hence his blood), or anything, or
anyone, such swearing was considered sinful.

P.S. Wikipedia fell down on this one. Rare, in my experience, but it happens.

Yes.

Simple test:

Are you talking about the word, or is it extraneous noise
thrown in for emphasis?

The topic on this one was software patents, not hell, so it
is swearing.

Bloody is an abridgement for the sacred oath, "By Our Lady".
"Our Lady" is a moniker for "The Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of
our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God".

So yes, the term is, at least from the point of view of both The Church of
England, and The Holy Roman Catholic and Apostolic Church of Christ, swearing.
