Free to use, freeware or open-source applications that everyone should have installed
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, December 12 2012 @ 08:05 PM EST
from Reddit
The big open source, freeware and free to use software list.

Note: All of the applications are free to use, freeware or open-source. A couple of them have however a trial period (you can still use the software after the trial has run out) or there's a purchasable version as well. I've also listed several similar applications (like Firefox and Chrome for browsers or Foxit Reader and Sumatra PDF for PDF readers) so that you can find your your own personal favorite. You don't need both, but it's nice to have something to chose from.

Thanks for all the recommendations and kind words which I've gotten over the past couple of hours. I've updated and cleaned up the list a bit, so it should look a bit better.

google search censorship
Authored by: designerfx on Wednesday, December 12 2012 @ 09:45 PM EST
At first, I thought this might have been misunderstood. You
can still get explicit results if you want to, but apparently
there's a nag box now, even if you turn off safesearch, and it
also censors wikipedia?

Am I the only one who finds this extremely ethically
questionable?

Gmail is NOT coming to Windows 8
Authored by: jplatt39 on Thursday, December 13 2012 @ 12:36 PM EST
Preston Gralla of Computerworld says Google told him there is so little interest in Windows 8 among their users that Gmail and many Google Business Apps are not going to be ported over to it.

Apple Loses Patent Case to Licensing Firm
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, December 13 2012 @ 08:17 PM EST
A federal jury in Delaware found Thursday that Apple Inc. infringed three patents belonging to a company partly owned by Nokia Corp. and Sony Corp. of America, in a case that shows how quickly the dynamics of patent licensing and litigation are changing.

The jury found that Apple's iPhone infringed three patents related to mobile-device technologies owned by MobileMedia Ideas LLC. Two of those patents came to MMI from Nokia and the third from Sony.

If math formulas were patent-able from the begining
Authored by: HenchmenResource on Thursday, December 13 2012 @ 08:19 PM EST
Ran across this href="http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php%3f
db=comics&id=2761#comic">comic a> that rater
humorously sums
up why patenting math formulas as well as
general ideas is
such a bad thing. Not sure if this has already been shared
here but thought others may find it as funny/scary as I did.
