What's interesting here is that this sound was first used in
the Quadra AV
series Macs back in the early 90s - the first
to have 16-bit audio output built
in. It then disappeared
for ages (the PowerMac 8100, at least, had a
completely
different chime) before coming back in the G3 line.
But I was
also sure that there was a slight difference
between the modern version of the
sound and the original.
If I can find a supply of PRAM batteries, I should
have a go
at comparing them - seeing as I still have one of those old
Quadras.
It's possible that the flat tuning is part of the
difference.
