Sega sueing Level-5
Authored by: DieterWasDriving on Tuesday, December 11 2012 @ 05:01 PM EST
The news pick title links to the wrong story.

The correct link is
http://www.siliconera.com/2012/12/11/sega-suing-level-5-says-inazuma-eleven-infr
inges-on-two-touch-screen-control-patents/

This the start of an explosion of lawsuit over game play elements. A top game
can easily surpass the revenue of the biggest hit movie, and it's far more
profitable.

Sega is asking for US$11M in royalties on the sales of 3 million games, and an
injunction on sales.

EU votes for unified patent system
Authored by: kg on Tuesday, December 11 2012 @ 10:32 PM EST
Interesting questions being raised.

The EU is fairly unique in that it doesn't usually have
official working languages. Yes, the Council of Europe has
the official languages English and French, but the EU itself
doesn't. Instead, it has a whole slew of official languages
that are equivalent. As a result the European Court of
Justice (the EU's highest court) drafts rulings in French,
but the rulings in all published languages are considered
equivalent for purposes of law. The proceedings, however,
are held in the language of the applicant's choice.

I could definitely see a translation factor coming into
play, where multiple translations are published, though the
original language of the patent is the one that holds
weight. Or maybe the EU patent office will require all
patents to be submitted in French. Now that would be
different.

Journalists Jailed
Authored by: kawabago on Wednesday, December 12 2012 @ 01:42 AM EST
Why is Saudi Arabia on every list of countries that do bad
things to their citizens? It doesn't seem to matter how low
they must stoop, Saudi Arabia always manages to be one of the
worst, most barbaric countries on the planet. Why are we even
friends with them? If the government represents the royal
family then they despicable people. Not in any way people to
defer to. If we really cared about justice we'd be actively
helping people overthrow them.
