How Corruption Is Strangling U.S. Innovation
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, December 08 2012 @ 11:30 AM EST
The corruption to which I am referring is the phenomenon of money in politics.

Lawrence Lessig's Republic, Lost, details many of the distortions that occur as a result of all the money sloshing around in the political system: how elected representatives are being forced to spend an ever-increasing amount of their time chasing donors for funds, for example, as opposed to chasing citizens for votes. Former congressman and CIA director Leon Panetta described it as "legalized bribery"; something which has just "become part of the culture of how this place operates."

But of all the negative impacts this phenomenon has had, it's the devastating impact it has on US competitiveness that should be most concerning.

Supreme Court to hear "pay-for-delay" drug case
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, December 08 2012 @ 12:57 PM EST
The Supreme Court agreed on Friday to decide whether brand-name drug companies may pay money to generic drug rivals to keep their lower-priced products off the market, a practice estimated to cost consumers and the government billions of dollars each year.

The arrangements, known as "pay-for-delay" or "reverse payments," have for more than a decade vexed antitrust enforcers, including the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which have been stung until recently by a series of court decisions allowing such practices.

In a typical case, a generic rival challenges the patent of a brand-name competitor, which then pays the rival a sum of money to drop its challenge. Defenders of the practice call it a legitimate means to resolve patent litigation.

Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan Apparently Can't Remember Anything
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, December 08 2012 @ 01:59 PM EST

Mat Taibbi post about a lawsuit against Bank of America over their Countrywide acquisition. I'm posting it because law firm Quinn Emmanuel is involved.

The parts of the deposition quoted are fascinating. I strongly recommend reading it, and comparing the responses to the responses we usually see in depositions.

Pixel Qi - seems to have 1280x800 screen as a SKU now...
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, December 08 2012 @ 02:24 PM EST
Some who had higher resolution netbooks, would not have
gotten the kit to modify their netbooks to 1024x600 when
their screen was better than that already.

So, Pixel Qi on their site lists a new higher resolution
screen.

Sure would like to know what 1280x800 netbook (with HDMI
connector) that I could modify adding that screen (even for
the better battery life), and would be curious if someone
has tested any mods themselves yet where they added this
1280x800 screen, and maybe also added touchscreen too (with
a how-to video posted)?

Since Apple is so busy protecting it's precious IP, perhaps Cisco could sue them
for using the name "iOS".

Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, December 08 2012 @ 11:50 PM EST
On November 16 a memo was put out by The Republican Study Committee (a group of conservative Congressmen) which advocated copyright reform. There was stunned amazement here in Groklaw. Absolute wonderment as to what the world was coming to. Here is a report about the memo goes to arstechnica

Well fear not for the future, the world is now back to normal. goes to crooksandliars The author of the memo was fired.

RIP Patrick Moore
Authored by: hairbear on Sunday, December 09 2012 @ 08:09 AM EST
Patrick Moore died about an hour ago at home.

He was a great inspiration to many amateur and professional astronomers as well
as being a wonderfull person.

It's sad that he's gone, although at 89 I think he had a good innings.

Guardian: Apple Maps could be life-threatening, Australian police warn
Authored by: macrorodent on Monday, December 10 2012 @ 04:00 AM EST
Not just a joke any more: Drivers have been stranded in scorching heat because Apple Maps misplaced a town (which competing mapping services show in the correct location).

There is no sliver of light at the end of the tunnel...
Authored by: Gringo_ on Monday, December 10 2012 @ 12:45 PM EST

Microsoft Closes Silverlight.net.

The fact that the product-specific URL has been decommissioned is most likely another reflection of the political shifts within Microsoft.

Now only the far flung reaches of Microsoft, such as Microsoft Research, still make use of Silverlight for new projects. The last major niche for Silverlight is as a legacy application running on Windows Phone 8. You can run a Silverlight app but you can't develop it further and you can't start a new Silverlight app. Microsoft must be hoping that all those Silverlight-delivered videos go the same way as Silverlight.net very soon.

So all these people that learned Silverlight, all this content that will eventually be left stranded on the internet, the Moonlight project... all for nothing in the end.
