I remember reading his "Guide To The Moon", as a young lad interested
in astronomy. It's still available as "Patrick Moore On The Moon"[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

He was on TV as recently as last night, but he did not seem very well. He
promised to explain something or other in the next episode of The Sky at Night,
but sadly that will be down to someone else now.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

He was a genuine institution and rightly so with a clear passion and enthusiasm
backed up by tremendous knowledge that was a pleasure to see.

"being a wonderful person"
Hate to be a contrarian here, he did do a lot to popularise Astronomy, and was
strong on animal welfare issues too, but on the personal side he fell a long way
short of wonderful. He was at times a racist, homophobe and mysoginist, being
linked to groups and political parties on the right-wing fringes, and blaming
many things he saw as wrong on women, gays and immigrants. As with most people
he was a very complex character and in lauding his great achievements we do a
disservice to history to cover up his failings in the process.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
