Hobbit 'trilogy'
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, December 09 2012 @ 05:45 AM EST
Tolkien wrote several works elaborating on the events referred to in both 'The
Hobbit' and the 'Lord of the Ring' cycle, some of which were published
posthumously.

These texts could conceivably provide material for a slew of what in modern
Hollywood parlance is termed 'prequels'.
and two of those would make of The Hobbit a trilogy.

Of course, the original reporter may not be familiar with the Middle-earth
legends and confuse the LoR film trilogy with the Hobbit.
Modern reporting tends towards shallowness, after all...

"Other than "The Hobbit", what other books are there to make up "the Hobbit trilogy"?"

The Hobbit is rather sparingly written, compared to LoTR; there's easily enough material to make two films out of it, unless you pruned it hard. Justifying a third is a little harder.

The Hobbit works as a trilogy, says Peter Jackson

The Lord of the Rings IS three books.

Not so fast.

Tolkien wrote it as SIX books, intending it to be published
as ONE volume, but it was broken up into THREE volumes, each
with TWO books in it.

Clear as mud?

The "trilogy" thing comes from the fact that, until a film
maker grabs hold of it, it does not exist. Therefore, "The
Hobbit" is a trilogy because Peter Jackson is making three
movies out of it. Tolkien? Oh, he wrote the drafts for the
movies.

I like Peter Jackson, as movie figures go. I just can't
stand what film makers do to books. Might be connected with
the fact that my favorite computer games are Roguelike
(Unangband) and Interactive Fiction (Zork and Frotz and the
ilk). My imagination is better than their special effects,
although it is nice to get a free ride once in a while.

An interesting link concerning LOTR books and movies
Authored by: artp on Monday, December 10 2012 @ 12:47 PM EST

There is a site where the differences between the books and the movies are catalogued. I find it quite interesting. Phillipa Boyen, the editor, has made some grevious errors in the movies - as we all have noticed - and this site calls them all out. I think it is relevant to the discussion on this thread.

Be sure to check out the links at the bottom of the page. The link above goes to a timeline of the Hobbit, but the re are several other links as well:

LINKS:

  • My review of "Fellowship of the Ring"
  • My FotR Differences page
  • My review of "The Two Towers"
  • My TTT Differences page
  • My review of "The Return of the King"
  • RotK Differences Page
  • The Chronology of "The Lord of the Rings" (a 66 kb. Excel spreadsheet)
  • Partly based on Mr. Harder's webpage - which is interesting reading.
