People who wouldn't know the top from the bottom of a paper map
are given something on a smartphone with an autorotating screen.
Whoops. Even paper maps are not reliable, which is why there is
a requirement to have an officer on watch capable of detecting any
difference between the map and observed reality.
Google Maps in the rural interior of China have a similar inaccuracy
to that quoted in the article.

This is a serious error. As summer approaches people may die. Mildura is a
considerable city (pop > 30000) and a major tourist and agricultural region
(irrigation). Many tourists travel there. Most having little/no experience of
Australia - distances, climate etc.
