External hard drives are terrible backup media. The only reason to use them at
all is that the main drive have outstripped the capacity of the backup devices
and media that we do have.
The first problem with external hard drives is that they contain both
electronics and media. You really need to separate the media from the
electronics. By having them both in one package, you greatly increase the odds
for failure.
Any decent backup strategy involves having several backup devices and storing
some off site, preferably five miles away or more so that any disaster that
strikes the main site is less likely to strike the off-site storage.
And with external drives, they are often connected to the computer and can be
written to at will from the computer.
And don't forget that if someone breaks in and steals the computer, they are
likely to take the external drives that are there as well.
Finally, external hard drives are not very resilient. They don't seem to last
all that long at all.
At the very least, external hard drives are acceptable backup solutions only for
minor things that might be a pain in the neck to lose but not critical.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
