Ubuntu Spyware
Authored by: Wol on Saturday, December 08 2012 @ 09:38 AM EST
What you're missing is this is a major confidentiality breach. It's a major
security breach. It's a major breach of trust.

I'll use the example I gave on LWN - your doctor is searching for a letter HE
wrote, on HIS computer. BY DEFAULT Ubuntu will send your name, SSN, and details
of your illness to Amazon, without the doctor even realising it's happening!

A *LOT* of people have very serious issues with this scenario.

My concerns are far less than that - I'm fed up with my search results being
polluted by people forcing their sales sites on me. This is merely YARTIU (yet
another reason to ignore Ubuntu). Don't expect me to recommend it, or install it
for anyone.

The lure of dollars might have persuaded Ubuntu to take the thirty pieces of
silver, but they should take a leaf out of Google's book. We the people might be
what Google are selling to advertisers, but they know if they keep US happy the
advertisers will come. Upset US and the advertisers will lose interest. It's an
uneasy truce, but it works. Which is why these sales aggregator sites are suing
Google trying to upset the balance.

Cheers,
Wol
