That pesky patent-troll/sock-puppet lodsys
Authored by: mbouckaert on Thursday, December 06 2012 @ 07:36 PM EST
I read two things there. Regarding interactive chat, we can quote from the B 6700/B7700 CANDE Language Manual (P/N 5000318, 10/2/1972) page 102 (thanks to bitsavers for saving it):

7.5 SS

The SS command provides the ability to send a message to another station.

Syntax:

I tried and failed to reproduce the railroad diagram in ASCII art here... Sorry.

Semantics:

The receiving station may be referenced by <lsn> or station name. SPO is the designation of the CANDE control terminal.

The <text> may consist of any character string up to the maximum of the sending or receiving terminal's line size.

I find something else in the referenced article, i.e., a patent on computers calling home in case of incidents. That is pretty old too, having been a big argument for the Tandem NonStop(TM) systems (1974-1977).

Ah, but maybe the patent is valid when "on a 8-bit-byte- adressable computer" ?
