As I understand it, the problem is (especially with ARM) that there are so many
"variations on a theme". In that there are only one or two versions of
any given component, but with say 20 different components per device that's a
massive number of combinations.

And if each device has its own driver, that's loads and loads of dupicated
code.

The device tree, aiui, allows linux to get rid of all those duplicates, but also
to know which components any device is made of, and hence which bits of code to
use.
