If The Hague is a country...

" singularly inappropriate label for the
inhabitants of the Netherlands."

Not really. The Dutch started it. There's a line in the
Dutch National Anthem (Wilhelmus) proudly pointing out that
William of Nassau was "of German blood" (van Duytschen
bloet)

I suppose a some Frisians still may not be happy with that,
but it's a minor sin. Frisian is still a Germanic language.
(I know, Frisian is a bit more like English than like
German, but English is a Germanic language too.) "Wholly
inappropriate" would be calling an Irishman German - that's
a totally separate language (and population). Calling a
Frisian "Dutch" isn't so bad.

Written the way an English speaker would (mis-)pronounce the
name of that town south of Amsterdam ;-)
