4 MEGAbytes minimum
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, December 04 2012 @ 06:18 PM EST
It's 4 megabytes, not 6. I'm aware of one distro that boots
in that much (Bootstrap Linux), and it only uses 2 MB after
boot.
Debian requires 48 MB to install, TinyCore is similar; Ubuntu
and Fedora need 200+ MB.

It's been a long time since any Linux kernel could run with that little memory.

The compiled kernel code itself might fit into that small space, but the buffers
needed to do anything result in a much larger footprint.

Fedora 17 refuses to install if you have less than 512 MB
of RAM, and using it is painful with less than 1 GB.
