Apple files patent for true wireless charging technology

The waterbed was unpatentable because R. A. Heinlein had already described it in
"Stranger in a Strange Land", and other works.

The nice thing about Arthur C. Clarke ...
Authored by: alisonken1 on Saturday, December 01 2012 @ 12:49 PM EST
... is that he was a scientist who just happened to write
SciFi as well.

It always helps when you're part of that group that tries to
find how to make things work rather than just wishful
thinking.

Arthur C Clarke and Communications Satellites
Authored by: TerryC on Saturday, December 01 2012 @ 02:03 PM EST

Actually Arthur C Clarke first wrote about communications satellites in Wireless World in the 1940s, initially though letters (here is one from 1945, (PDF), see page 58).  Later he wrote a full article in Wireless World, which gave all the necessary calculations to determine the height of orbit needed to provide a geostationary satellite, etc; I have a paper copy of that article somewhere, but I think it's at work (I couldn't find it on the net).

The point is that these were not works of fiction; these were the groundwork for the real thing.

Just think; if Microsoft added 'You hereby grant us a license to print money' to their EULA, it wouldn't change its meaning a bit.

Terry
