PJ - I would never do that
Authored by: Wol on Monday, December 03 2012 @ 05:44 PM EST
If you actually READ the stuff, they do say that this is a registration to vote
in this year's poll. Once the poll is over, I presume (I didn't check) the
database will be dumped or archived. It WON'T be used again.

Next year's poll will start with a clean sheet.

Cheers,
Wol

Dumbstruck?
Authored by: stegu on Monday, December 03 2012 @ 08:12 PM EST
I just chose to tolerate, for this purpose, the
bad coder who chose to create some haphazard
"registration" (which it really wasn't) to
"validate" the votes (which it really didn't,
I never received the countersign request I was
expecting).

The reason was that I cared more about voting
than I worried about any potential risk from
disclosing an email address over unencrypted HTTP.
I can't stop even my primary email address from
becoming public anyway, because of my job.
I fully realize your situation might be different,
but if my post left you "dumbstruck", well, then
you are very easily dumbstruck. You can choose to
be as cautious as you want, but don't insult me
by suggesting I am reckless or stupid for choosing
to do as many other Groklawers did and vote for
my favorite legal blog in that badly coded poll.

And, finally, if you want to "borrow" my five-letter
username to somehow teach me a lesson, I can't
stop you. It's not as if I can claim any rights to it.

Lawyers not getting the tech, again...
Authored by: Anonymous on Monday, December 03 2012 @ 11:34 PM EST
I've voted on numerous polls on tech and security sites,
where there is no formal registration process. The poll
engine records the IP address of each voter and dumps
it to a buffer if it hasn't already got a copy there, in which
case the vote is rejected. Now an IP nr may or may not be
more identifying than an email, but it has this advantage:
with an ISP that allocates a dynamic address you might get
(256 x however many C blocks) votes. Whereas throwaway
emails at the ABA means you'll soon get tired of voting.

(OT) Signature of dlrapp

I personally *love* that alleged quote from Benjamin Franklin. But one time I
was wanting to verify the wording of that quote before I posted it in a forum.
Much to my surprise an Internet search (i.e. Google, et al) led me to conclude
there is no reliable evidence that Mr. Franklin ever said such a thing. While I
totally agree with that sentiment I find I can no longer dignify it by appending
a well-known name to it. Can you cite reliable evidence thatBenjamin Franklin
ever said or wrote that?
