I bought the Bonobo Pro 5 from System76 about a year ago (they've discontinued
it, which is too bad). I tried to price something similar at the time (with
either Linux pre-installed or with no OS installed) and Dell wanted over $4500,
HP wanted almost $5000.
The system I got was about $3300 at System76, and it's a mean beast. I actually
run my entire server farm (9 servers) virtually for testing purposes, as well as
music composition with huge sound font libraries, mixing, looping, effects
(realtime) with no slowdown whatsoever. My previous laptop was from HP, and the
one before that was from Dell. They were not cheap laptops either (price), but
they were still junk (quality).
While I do think that the price for my laptop was crazy-high -- it took me over
six months to make that plunge -- I would rather pay it yet again than be stuck
with a piece of junk from either Dell or HP, and pay a MS tax to boot.
When Dell begins to sell a _respectable laptop with some distribution of Linux
pre-installed, I may consider them again. Until then, I'll remain convinced
that Dell is a joke, selling junk computers that, hardware-wise, pale in
comparison even to the computers that come shipped with Windows pre-installed.
It's as if they think I'm so dumb that I won't notice it. ("What's that in
the distance? Is that a turnip truck? Nah... Just a shady salesman.")
