What about Galileo?

Eh, not quite the same thing.

That was more misinterpretation of Bible vs observation.

This is more theory vs theory, one of which has strong religious connections.

What about Galileo?
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, November 30 2012 @ 03:11 PM EST
Actually the whole affair between Galileo and the Roman Catholic Church was started not by the church itself but by other astronomers of the day as Galileo's work went against the consensus of the time. The other astronomers tried to use the ecclesiastical courts of the church against Galileo. Originally the Church and the Jesuits supported Galileo. However a later published defense of heliocentrism was for some reason taken as an attack on the Pope Urban VIII and it is for this that he got tried for heresy Normally I don't consider Wikipedia much of a source, but considering their biases they are probably accurate on this one.
