What you say is still perfectly valid for the
hour hand, though. All is not lost for the
existing minute hand either, but it becomes
quite cumbersome to read the minutes:
You need to paint 83 1/3 tick marks around the
perimeter, subtract 83 1/3 times the reading of
the hour hand from it, interpret the result
modulo 100, and and then do a sanity check:
if you arrive at a small number even though the hour
hand is closer to the next hour than the previous hour,
you need to add 83 1/3. If you arrive at a large number
despite the hour hand being closer to the previous hour
than the next hour, you need to subtract 83 1/3.
So in practice, if you repaint the clock face, the
minute hand should probably be removed to preserve
the sanity of the users.
