It wasn't.
Over time, huge amounts of carbon were released via volcanoes, sheet lava flows.
Then over time that additional carbon was stored in peat (turned to coal and
oil).
More carbon was released, more stored in additional layers - calcium
carbonate/marble. This reduced the atmospheric carbon (also reduced the global
supply of calcium).
Releasing the coal and oil puts more carbon in the air than was originally there
at any one time.
Have we exceeded the amount of atmospheric carbon in the last interstitial
period? Don't know for sure, thats what some of the arctic/anarctic ice cores

Sorry to tell you, but there is thriving civilization beyond
the borders of USA.

"nearly killed off...multiple times" So why are we still here?
Looks to me like the system has some autoregulation.
I'll take the Gaia theory thanks. The planet's biosystem will
make the necessary corrections to overcome human stupidity.
What is necessary for the planet might not be to the temporary
comfort of humans. Learn to live with it.
