"Recommendations to Prevent Catastrophic Threats."
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, November 24 2012 @ 02:16 PM EST
Browsing thru one of my favorite security blogs, Bruce Schneier , saw a reference from the Federation of American Scientists, which looks like it's intended as a backgrounder for the incoming President of whatever persuasion. All the usual suspects lined up, nuclear, biological, chemical, plus small arms, energy and cyber security. Not a word about a five metre storm surge washing the north Atlantic seabord, or about what to do when the sea rises one metre round the whole coast. That's presumably not a catastrophe. 44pp, pdf, 1.4MB, Recommendations to Prevent Catastrophic Threats

Ben Franklin -- Daylight Savings.
Authored by: Anonymous on Saturday, November 24 2012 @ 11:41 PM EST
This is hilarious:

Ben Franklin - Daylight Saving (text)
Ben Franklin - Daylight Saving (LibriVox audio, ogg format)

Also thought it was interesting that he took something of a BSD license approach to his idea, in that he said he wouldn't charge for it, but instead only wanted the recognition for it. Could this idea of freedom and collaboration between peoples (the fundamentals of open source) have been rooted by none other than Benjamin Franklin? I would be interested to identify earlier writings than this (1784), that incorporate the concept. Anyone know of more?

apple patents panorama photos
Authored by: N_au on Sunday, November 25 2012 @ 06:21 AM EST
Followed a link from newspicks "Samsung Forces Apple to Shift Battery
Suppliers for iPad" and a link on there shows that apple has just received
5 patents on making panorama photos. What is so different about this than do it
on a phone. We have been able to do that for years. Take a sequence of photos
and use software to stitch them together. My son's Galaxy SII will do it in the
phone for you so what is so novel about what the fruit company is doing?

Off topic: Apple moves to drop Samsung as supplier
Authored by: DieterWasDriving on Sunday, November 25 2012 @ 07:01 PM EST

Or alternately, "Samsung shuts off supply to Apple".

The real long-term question is if Apple will be part of the mobile ecosystem.
They have an internal view that they exist independently, creating their own
products from scratch and inventing everything new that the products contain.

Others view the situation as being much different. Apple relies on external
supplier for every element of their hardware. On the software side, they build
upon an existing base of OS and infrastructure software.

Apple can't build memory chips, displays, batteries, earphones or any other
hardware components of their products. Evidence suggests that they recently
designed their own ARM processor implementation, but of course they still rely
on a "merchant semiconductor" fab line to make the make the chips, and
there are only three (two?) viable fab lines. There is a rumor that they
recently had to invest $1B to keep Sharp in business to hedge against Samsung
cutting of a big chunk of their display supply.
If they move to second tier battery suppliers, they increase the chance the
chance of lithium fires or warranty returns from sudden loss of capacity.

If Apple continues down their current path, they may become an industry pariah,
only able to source from desperate or new suppliers at higher prices.

Forensic investigator (CSI whiz?) only checked the IE history. But most of the activity had been on Firefox/Mozilla. Link to CS Monitor article.
