|It's true that the big well known pharma corps in the US aren't much interested|
in making off patent drugs even where the off patent drugs are the most
effective options. There are still a good number of companies in the US making
good money manufacturing off patent drugs.
As one example, I have obstructing sleep apnea and chronic respiratory
allergies. I need a good antihistamine in a long lasting dose and the 24hour
non-drowsy ones don't cut it for me. For me the most effective antihistamine
has always been Chlortrimiton but the company that owned it came out with
Claritin just as the active ingredient in Chlortrimiton went off patent. The
stopped making all but the 4 hour dose of Chlortrimiton.
There is now a company making a geneneric version of Chlortrimiton in a 12 hour
dose and selling it in bulk through several on-line retailers including Amazon.
