It also misses the fact there is no incentive to upgrade.
Vista was so bad that everyone wanted to get off it onto Windows 7, but most
people feel that Windows 7 is a competent product that does the job they want,
and that Windows 8 seems to add complexity and confusion.
Also, competing Unix environments are becoming more competent; one of the good
things that Apple has done is ensure that it is no longer essential to have a PC
running Windows, and the increasing amount of work done on both Android and iOS
tablets and other devices means that company infrastructure has to be more
flexible on where and how work is done.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Just like they couldn't (and I don't believe that they ever have) admit that
Vista was a clunker.
Of course ten years from now Windows 8 might be recognized as a huge
step forward. I just don't see it happening. It seems to have been designed
in a haphazard fashion.
In a lot of ways Microsoft's failure to deliver Longhorn hurt them. At least in
my opinion.

I think your title is a rather optimistic view.
In my opinion trying to force an interface designed around small touchscreens on
to desktop environments is going to be an epic fail the likes of which Microsoft
hasn't seen since Microsoft Bob.

Microsoft is now a legacy vendor, just like the remaining mainframe vendors.
They just need to recognize this fact and adapt to it. The IT industry has grown
and diversified beyond the scope of a single company. Microsoft's current
problems relate to their obsession with the notion that for them to succeed,
others must fail.
The existing management is bound up with a view of
the industry that dates from the early days of the company's success and aren't
willing to adapt to a world where IT technology is a part of the mainstream of
everyday life. They need a complete overhaul of the existing management team,
and to bring in people from outside Microsoft who would be willing to look at
things from a fresh point of view. If they don't do this, then their future
involves stagnating until they are taken over by a vulture capitalist who will
go through the company cutting cost with a chainsaw and then selling off the
remaining bits to IBM and others.

Isn't it just the case that this is the "odd" release syndrome
of MS OS releases? You know, every other release is a clunker?
Vista clunker, 7 workable, 8 clunker, 9 (presumed workable)[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
